While it does produce less water per day, the APEC water filter offers 99% purification of over 1,000 contaminants. Just some of these include lead, viruses, bacteria, chlorine, and fluoride. It is rated for use with feed water pressure ranging from 40 PSI to 85 PSI. Note that this water filter is also rated for use with well water.
This water filter also comes with a chrome faucet, as well as food-grade water tubing that uses quick connect fittings. DIY installation is simple and fast. It also features a two-year warranty from the manufacturer. However, note that this is an RO system, but it does not include remineralization capabilities. This means the water produced may be slightly acidic rather than having a neutral pH. It also removes some important minerals from the water, including calcium and magnesium.

However, water filtration is a rather niche topic and you may find some of the terminology a little bit confusing. That can make it challenging to find the right water purification system for you even with access to water filter reviews and information. To help clear the air and ensure that you’re able to make an informed buying decision, we’ve included a brief buying guide below that will walk you through some of the key considerations that you should make when buying a water filter.
Finding the Best Under-Sink Water Filters: A Guide for First-Time Buyers
If you’re in the market for an under-sink water filter, there are quite a few things that you’re going to need to keep in mind while comparing options. Not all filters are created equal, and even those of the same style can vary dramatically when it comes to performance, lifespan, chemicals/contaminants removed, and other factors. In this guide, we’ll break down important considerations to help you make a more informed decision.
First, there are two types of under-sink filters listed in our water filter reviews. These are reverse osmosis (RO) filters, and non-RO filters.
RO Filters – RO filters are the most common on the market. They use older, established technology and are able to purify your water from a wide range of contaminants. In fact, they are generally the highest performing options out there from a solely purification standpoint. However, they do have some drawbacks. These include the following:
● Size: RO filters are always larger than non-RO filter systems. This is because they contain a tank that usually holds three to five gallons of water, in addition to one to three filters and the housing necessary to use those filters. This can make RO under-sink filters poor choices for those with limited amounts of space.
● Waste: RO filters are infamous for their waste of water. In order to purify a single gallon of drinking water, most systems send two gallons of water down the drain. This increases your waste, as well as your sewage costs (if you pay for water waste). It also increases your impact on water reserves. Some systems may waste even more water. You will need to check the waste vs. pure water ratio of each model to determine how much water is wasted in the purification process.
● Flow: Generally speaking, RO filters have a slower flow rate than non-RO filters. This is due to the reverse osmosis process and the tank attached to the system. To combat lower flow rates, RO systems usually use a small, narrow second faucet.
● Mineral Removal: RO filters remove so many elements from your water that it essentially becomes “dead” water. To combat this, some systems have a remineralization component that adds calcium, magnesium, and other minerals back into the water. Often, these also balance the pH of the water. However, this is not true for all RO systems, so make sure you know whether the one you’re thinking about buying includes remineralization capabilities.
Non-RO Filters – We covered several non-RO filters in our under-sink water filter reviews. These usually consisted of a single filter housing that connects directly to the water line and your existing faucet. However, some non-RO filters have up to three filters depending on the brand and the system configuration. In general, non-RO filters have higher flow rates and do not waste any water the way RO systems do. However, that does not mean that they are free of tradeoffs. Some of the drawbacks here include the following:
● Contaminant Types: While RO filters can often remove hundreds of different contaminant types, non-RO filters are sometimes more limited. You’ll need to carefully study the list of things that the filter can remove prior to making a purchase.
Some of these filters are primarily designed to make your water more potable by removing chlorine and chloramine, but few other chemicals. Some do not remove hormones or pharmaceuticals from the water, either.
Note that this is not true across the board, though. Many non-RO filters are as capable or even more capable than RO filters when it comes to removing contaminants from your water.
How Does an RO Filter Work?
Reverse osmosis filters are pretty complex systems that offer the ability to remove just about everything from your water. Understanding how they work is important. The process is as follows:
● Water moves through one or more filters in the system, each designed to remove a particular type of contaminant (dissolved solids, chemicals, etc.). In most systems, there will be a particulate filter first, then an activated charcoal filter, which traps minerals and chemicals, like chlorine and lead.
● Water moves from the filters through a special semipermeable membrane. This membrane diverts 95-99% of dissolved contaminants into the waste stream, which is directed down the drain.
● Purified water is directed to the storage tank under the sink. From there, it moves up to the special faucet installed at your sink when you open the tap.
● Some systems include another inline activated charcoal filter just before the water reaches the tap to ensure that it tastes as pure and clean as possible.
What Can RO Systems Remove?
Again, RO systems can remove just about anything that might be in your water. This includes:
● Chromium 6
● Biological agents – giardia, for instance
● Bacteria – E.coli and salmonella, for instance
● Viruses – rotavirus, and hepatitis A, for instance
Note that most RO systems do not completely remove minerals, but reduce their presence to very low levels.
How Do Non-RO Filtration Systems Work?
Non-RO filtration systems work similarly to RO systems with the exception of the semipermeable membrane. It helps to think of these as a series of increasingly fine filters. Water flows into the pre-filtering section of the system, where things like sand and other large particles are trapped. Then, it moves through activated charcoal filters, filters made from coconut husk fiber, sand filters, and more. Each filter is increasingly tight, trapping smaller and smaller molecules to help ensure that the water that reaches your tap is as clean as possible.
How Do Non-RO Filters Compare to RO Filters in Terms of Performance?
The performance of a non-RO filter will vary depending on the type of system in question. There are three types in use today – microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration.
Microfiltration – Microfiltration is an older technology, but it is very good at cleaning water. It can remove anything larger than 0.1 microns in size, including giardia and other protozoa, bacteria, such as salmonella, and the like. However, it cannot remove chemicals, hormones, or pharmaceuticals, and is not very effective at removing viruses from water.
Ultrafiltration – Ultrafiltration technology can filter out particulates larger than 0.01 microns and is very good at cleaning water of bacteria and protozoa. However, it less effective at removing viruses, and not very good when it comes to chemicals, although it can remove some.
Nanofiltration – Nanofiltration is the ultimate level when it comes to non-RO systems. These filters can remove anything larger than 0.001 microns, and can completely eliminate protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. These filters are good at minimizing chemicals in water, but do not remove them completely.
Activated Carbon – Activated carbon is a type of filter, but we’re going to treat it separately. That’s because this is the most effective filter option for non-RO systems. It can remove heavy metals, including lead, and it can be effective (depending on type and design) at removing things like pesticides, chlorine and its byproducts, and does eliminate organic contaminants.
Note that activated carbon does not remove dissolved minerals, so there is no need for remineralization. It also does not remove nitrates or bacteria, which makes these poor choices if you use well water.
It is tempting to assume that you want protection from as many contaminants in your water as possible. It makes sense. However, that is actually not the case. Each area’s municipal water supply is different.
For instance, city water in Ocala, Florida, is very different from what you’ll get in Los Angeles, California. What does this mean for you and your search for a filter? Simply put, you need to know what contaminants are present in your water before you make a purchase. That’s not as challenging as you might think, though.
The company that handles your water is required by law to test for water quality periodically, and to publish the results of those tests. In most cases, the test results are available on the water company’s website. In a worst-case scenario, you will need to either call and have the results mailed to you or pay a visit to the headquarters to get a printout.
Based on those results, you can determine which chemicals and contaminants are actually threats to your health and which are either not present, or are present in such low quantities (parts per million, or PPM), that they do not pose a health threat at all. This ensures that you’re able to get the protection that you need while not overpaying for a system with features that don’t actually do you any good.
How Much Pressure Do You Want?
All under-sink filters will affect your water pressure to some extent. However, they do not all have the same impact. RO filters generally affect it the most, and inline filters have the least impact. With that being said, you will need to consider how much pressure you’re willing to lose before you make a purchase.
Generally speaking, two gallons of water per minute is considered very good for any type of water filter. Even one and a half gallons per minute is considered decent. Both are steps down from what many people enjoy in terms of water pressure without a filter installed.
There is a drawback to consider here, though. The higher the pressure at the tap, the less time your water spends moving through the filter, which may mean that you don’t get the purest water possible. So, when comparing your options, make sure that you look at both the gallons per minute and the contaminant removal capabilities of the filter.
Gallons Per Day
If you read through our under-sink water filter reviews, you noticed that several had very specific production amounts listed as “gallons per day”. Many of the filters we reviewed were capable of producing 65 or 75 gallons per day. Others only offered around 50 gallons per day. If all you’re using the water for is to make coffee or tea, and to fill up a glass for drinking every now and then, this will not matter much.
However, most of us use the water from our sinks in a wide range of ways that you might not think about when choosing an under-sink water filter. These include the following:
● Connected icemaker
● Cooking water
● In-fridge water
● Home carbonation systems (SodaStream, for instance)
All of these things take water and it can add up very quickly. It is important that you’re able to purchase a water filter capable of keeping you supplied with fresh water throughout the entire day. Look at the gallon per day production capabilities of each filter on your list of possible options before you make a final decision.
When you’re shopping around for an under-sink water filter, you’ll want to consider the ease (or difficulty) of installation. You will find that RO systems are much more difficult to install than non-RO systems. One reason for this is that you must connect a drain line to allow waste water to be sent out of the home. Another reason is that you must connect the tank, as well as the water line and filters.
In many cases, what is touted as a DIY installation ultimately requires a plumber to ensure that it is done right. Of course, this is not the case with all of them. The RO systems that made our list of the best under-sink water filters all offer simple installation, although reverse osmosis filters will always be more complicated to install than in-line filters.
Before you purchase a water filter, make sure you understand the installation process. This involves more than just looking at the equipment included. You should have a good idea of the amount of time and expertise you’ll need to handle it. Some systems can be installed in under 30 minutes, while others might require two hours to complete. With that being said, a more complicated installation process might be warranted to help combat the health concerns and contaminants that affect your water.
When buying an under-sink water filter for your home, you’ll certainly want to consider maintenance. Not only does this require time, but it will also increase your costs over the life of the filter system.
The most common type of maintenance you will need to perform is replacing spent filters. All water filter systems have at least one filter in them. Some have three or even four. You will need to consider the ease replacing each filter, how often each needs to be replaced (different types of filters have different lifespans), and the cost associated with each filter.
Other types of maintenance that you may need to complete include:
● Turning off water to the system and removing/replacing the semipermeable membrane (RO systems only)
● Cleaning the entire system (with filters removed) using hydrogen peroxide
Note that because the system is installed under your sink, maintenance will be more challenging than some homeowners anticipate. Be prepared to get under the sink and spend time changing filters and cleaning things up to keep your system in good shape.
Is a Filter System Right for Me?
In most cases, an under-sink filter system is best suited for those who simply want clean, fresh water to drink and use in their cooking. Few systems are rated for those on wells because of the possibility of bacteria. Additionally, neither RO systems nor sediment filters will do anything about hard water. In order to treat hard water, you must have a water softener installed. Note that most water filters are not designed to handle softened water.
